Rumour Morata agrees deal with Juventus

I read in the Metro that there are rumours that Alvaro Morata has agreed a deal to join Juventus this summer and will take a pay cut to join.

The rumours continue to say that as of yet there has been no deal agreed between Juventus and Chelsea, although Juventus are apparently unwilling to spend above £60 million to sign him, but would willing to take him on a two-year long and then sign him in 2020.

I think Juventus will have better luck convincing Chelsea with a £60 million offer than the two-year long arrangement with an obligation to buy at the end of it.

Chelsea paid an initial fee of £58 million for Morata in the summer when they signed him from Real Madrid, so £60 million would at least mean the club break even on him if they decide to sell him and move in a new direction this summer with a new manager.

Personally I'm hoping the club don't sell him.

Yes, Morata has had a tough first season in the Premier League, he has struggled for consistency, he's only scored 15 goals in his 44 appearances (11 in the Premier League, 2 in the FA Cup, 1 in the League Cup, and 1 in the Champions League), and most recently he's lost his place to January signing Olivier Giroud in the starting line-up.

However he's only 25 years of age, he's still relatively young and learning. This is both his first season in the Premier League and as a regular starter and being the main striker. Both of which require a lot of change and adaptation, both physically and mentally, feel free to insert your chosen cliché about the physicality of the Premier League here.

The other thing that hasn't helped Morata in his first season at Chelsea and in the Premier League is injuries.

He went off injured after 35 minutes in the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City at the end of September and he looks like he's struggled with fitness ever since.

Going into that game Morata had 7 goals (and two assists) in 7 appearances for Chelsea. After that injury it is 8 goals in 37 appearances. Clearly that is a big difference.

He never got to heal properly from that injury because Antonio Conte rushed him back because he didn't trust Michy Batshuayi and there was no other alternative at the club, this started affecting his performances which in turn knocked his confidence.

There is also a big difference in the number of yellow cards he picked up before and after that injury against Man City. Just one of the 10 yellow cards he has received this season was picked up before that injury compared with 9 after it, plus his one red card was picked up after it as well.

Maybe being low on confidence, frustrated, and desperate to have an impact on games to try to find some form, especially in a World Cup year, led to him arguing more often with officials.
Both of those are just speculation on my part but it is interesting looking at the differences in form before and after he went off injured in that Man City game.

It's why I hope that Chelsea don't sell Morata after just one season. Give him a chance to adapt to the Premier League, to recover from his injury and get back to full fitness, to find again that form he was in earlier in the season when he scored 7 goals in 7 appearances. I believe he could be a good striker for us.

Besides we've got rid of too many players too quickly in recent seasons and look at how that's worked out.

What do you think? Should Chelsea sell Morata? Do you think he'll be better next season?
